Episode 003 - John Cerone
John Cerone stops by the DUMBO studio to talk SHoP, Robots, SNL, Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson, The Lawnmower Man, IGES, CATIA and the 3DEXPERIENCE.
Show Notes
-
SHoP was founded in 1996 and is known for pushing advanced design-to-construction methodologies such as parametric design, BIM, modular construction, and VDC.
-
CATIA is the cornerstone of the Dassault Systemes software suite and is a robust parametric assembly modeler that connects CAD to the wider manufacturing ecosystem, a type of product commonly referred to as PLM.
-
Atlantic Yards B2 (SHoP, ARUP, Forest City Ratner) is set to be the largest modular building in the world.
-
QTO, or Quantity Takeoff, is a detailed measurement of material and labor quantity necessary to complete a construction project.
-
Robots and labor unions share an uneasy relationship at the moment.
-
The Tesla robotic Model S factory may be the coolest thing that’s ever happened.
-
Barclay’s Center is finally getting it’s long anticipated green roof.
-
Component instantiation in CATIA is based on code instantiation, an important mechanism for code reuse in object-oriented programming languages.
-
When templated instantiation fails to work for special cases John has to “handstanch” (instantiation by hand) or “manstanch” (manually instantiate) the component.
-
IGES is a vendor-neutral exchange file format commonly used for NURBS surfaces.
-
HAL is a Grasshopper plugin for industrial robots named after this guy.
-
RAPID is the proprietary robotics language for ABB robots
-
Surface class, C value, and G value are means of defining freeform surface quality and continuity and are largely the domain of transportation design.
-
Alpha or opacity maps are used to define the transparency of an object relative to a grayscale bitmap.
-
Your coffee porn name is the size of the coffee followed by the name of the drink.
-
3DEXPERIENCE is a web-based hybrid cloud system that allows the user to access all of Dassault’s PLM software modules in a more cohesive manner, effectively converging the design to simulation to manufacturing process into a single robust model.
-
Onshape, from some of the original developers of SolidWorks, is the first fully cloud-based implementation of collaborative CAD modeling. See also: Fusion 360.
-
I hate this hacker crap (Jurassic Park)
-
Trapped in the mainframe (The Lawnmower Man)
-
Gesture control (Minority report)
- Warning: F10 toggles control points in Rhino but will stop your Camtasia recording.
Lightning round:
-

Describe your productivity ritual.
-
John’s been going to a personal trainer - you work better if you’re sore everywhere
-
Alternate personal trainer night with wings night
-
-
What’s something that you think is a critical issue in technology that’s currently being overlooked?
-
Risk-averse culture - not willing to take the liability necessary for innovation - deliver the model rather than archaic drawing sets
-
-
What’s something that recently blew your mind?
-
Rocks
-
Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s gun show (He was guest hosting on the episode of SNL that John attended)
-
Zach’s adjustable arm rests
-
-
What is the most irritating part of your day?
-
Commuting at the end of the day on the F train, 3DEXPERIENCE
-
and what is the most enjoyable?
-

-
-
Who is Banksy?
-
The guy who spray paints little turds all over Vienna.
-
